BIOBUILD designs and produces wood building prototypes using impregnated bioPCM wood flooring and wallboards. The wallboards are used as interior walls and ceilings to collect data for energy performance and efficiency. The two buildings are houses built for each demo site in Sweden and Spain.

One house is used as a baseline and is compared to the second house at the respective demo site incorporating the innovative materials of the BIOBUILD concept. The house integrating the novel materials undergoes testing in two configurations: parquet and wallboards. the three types of wallboards, each utilizing a different binder, are alternated every 8 months between Sweden and Spain.  Both houses are equipped with integrated heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to ensure thermal comfort by meeting the demand for space heating and cooling.

These buildings are intended for real-world use either as offices or residential spaces, taking into consideration the installation and impact of all necessary services and facilities.

To assess the performance of the BIOBUILD concept, sensing areas, energy meters and a data acquisition system are installed. Temperature sensors and energy meters are placed in the living area to gather information on the energy usage of the HVAC system. Additionally, the data acquisition system is configured to collect and transmit data remotely.

The protype demonstration and the testing are carefully harmonized to facilitate comparability of results and to utilize advanced models to gain maximum information and identify the most effective novel products. Strict procedures will be implemented to ensure an independent evaluation of key performance metrics including energy efficiency impacts, thermal comfort benefits, overall life cycle environmental impacts and life cycle cost metrics.

BIOBUILD is evaluating the sustainability of the products in terms of their life cycle impact, economic feasibility and compliance with regulations and standards.  The project aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of market suitability of the new building materials and their effectiveness in achieving energy savings in buildings.
